RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – We are 5 months into the year, how’s that New Year’s resolution working out? Have you gotten off track on your eating and workouts?

Many are turning to apps and social media for help getting healthy.

“Exercise takes you to a certain point, but you can’t out-exercise a bad diet.” says former Richmonder, Ryan Ball.

Ball would know.

He weighed in at over 300 pounds and wasn’t happy with his eating or exercise habits.

“I decided to make a change and started eating healthier,” Ball said. “I took one of the spare rooms of the house and thanks to craigslist, I bought a bunch of workout equipment. It turned out to be cheaper than a gym membership.”

After stepping up his exercise, he turned to technology to help him manage his eating.

“I try to keep track of calories and put good stuff in my body,” Ball said. “So, I downloaded an app on my phone called LoseIt!

LoseIt! let him scan food labels to track calories, fat, and everything else to give him a picture of what his daily food intake looked like.

“I would walk through a grocery store with it in my hand – scanning everything,” Ball said.

Ball also said the app helped him learn what was good and what was bad. The healthy eating combined with exercise, helped him drop between 100 and 150 pounds.

He believes it’s a reachable goal for anyone who is willing to put in the time.

“I’m one of the world’s laziest people,” Ball said. “If I can do this, anyone can do it!”

Mother, Kerrie Bogaz, also made a huge lifestyle change in her quest to be healthy for both herself and her kids.

“I think people really get caught up in having to do this routine,” Bogaz said. “I just believe in doing something.”

She said it’s a journey and you just have to go your own path.

Four years ago, Bogaz started eating right and exercising more. But from there, she was lost.

She found help and support on social media in a private Facebook group.

“The aspect of the group was being as healthy as you can be, but loving yourself as you are, and developing a healthy mindset,” Bogaz said.

That lead her to another Facebook group on weight lifting – something many women shy away from. That particular group helped her learn about the lifting positions and workouts along with nutrition.

Bogaz lost 70 to 75 pounds while putting on lots of muscle. She now uses the Nike Running app to help her track and log her workouts.

“With the season changing, I want to be outside,” Bogaz said. “With the Nike Running app, you can join with your friends, do challenges, and motivate one another.”

Both LoseIt and the Nike Run app have free versions.
