You might want to think twice about passing up the fruit and veggie aisle at the grocery store. One life insurance company has partnered with 16,000 stores nationwide to give customers an incentive to eat healthier while saving money.
John Hancock Insurance President Michael Doughty told the FOX Business Network’s Stuart Varney, customers can save up to $600 per year on groceries in addition to racking up points for discounts on insurance premiums.
“You would use the existing [grocery] store card that you have and you’ll automatically get credited when you buy those healthy fruits and vegetables and other foods,” he said.
A new report released Wednesday revealed an alarming increase in suicide, drug overdoses and a decrease in life expectancy – problems Doughty pegs on lifestyle.
“The leading causes [of death] are caused by really how much we eat, what we eat, how much we exercise and whether we smoke or not… We believe if we can encourage our customers to take small steps… We are going to obviously help them live a long healthy life and that’s good for us as a company.”
